Local talent and Late Show regular Hysteric has released a new pressing of Italo flavors. It will be available locally from Northside Records and online at Clone or Bordello A Parigi.

A mix CD by Hysteric is also available with the purchase locally. The C.D mix is fully mastered and limited to the first few purchases. Titled "Italo City" it is a unique blend of specific Italo Disco made between '82 and '89.

The 4 Hero track is something that reminds me of Kano and Ennio Styles and that great era known as Nu Jazz. Then you find the remix package and it has a Kaidi Tatham remix on there. Now it sounds complete Jazz/ Funk fusion (the throwback sound of summer 2011/2012). The Tullio De Piscopo Stop Bajon surprised me on first listen and it took me 5 minutes to realize it had already been a Late Show anthem. indstrom is not so much a throwback (2006) but it stops me playing boring Nu Disco.

Lewis CanCut was one of the first to champion the genre blend. His recent remix for the Cumbia Cosmonauts has been tearing up Melbourne recently. All artists are big contributors to the Scattermusic site and have each produced and edited enough material to make each DJ session more unique than the quack at your local pub (or pubs anywhere for that matter).

Every Saturday night for over 12 years The Late Show has provided Melbourne punters with a rare and much loved clubbing experience. Nestled in the cosy surrounds of Revolver Upstairs, the weekly party unfolds over two rooms and many hours with an impressively diverse selection of talented local and touring DJs. Musically things progress from the early evening mellow soundtrack to diners at Revolver's renowned restaurant Colonel Tan's, through a self assured path of disco, boogie and afro beats on the way to Revolver's well known morning house in the back bar, while the front room kicks into action not long after midnight with cutting edge upfront bass driven sounds.

The atmosphere has long helped develop and nurture some of Melbourne's most talented artists, both behind the decks and in their production endeavors outside of the club night. Over the years The Late Show has released several production packages including the highly sought after Disco Edits volumes 1 and 2, plus the forward thinking TLS USB drives. Finally this year we have completed a 100% artist compilation, comprised entirely of original material submitted by producers directly associated with The Late Show.

The CD itself attempts to recreate the full musical gamut of the club night, from early soulful cuts to authentic disco and midnight boogie and on to upfront late night bass-lines. 1. Top 3 moments the Internet amazed you?

Hahaha i have no idea, i guess because ive grown up with the internet from a young age ive always expected the internet to do whatever i wanted. Maybe those 3 chicks on redtube where amazing moments...

2. You work a lot with the OZ hip hop community. Who’s talent is least seen?

Well i DJ for 360 but thats really my only connection with it hahaha I cant say i really pay attention to the Oz hip hop scene but i would say my homie Skryptcha from Sydney is a big talent that people need to pay attention to. Obviously 360 as well, his doing things his way and i wouldnt be DJing for him if i didnt believe in his music. His album is going to change the game when it drops so be ready!

3. You mash a mean meat burger, can we have your recipe?

Ive been working on my burgers over the last few months, i really enjoy making them for friends and having people enjoy them. My burgers are always just beef, cheese, tomato, baby cos lettuce, mustard and my special sauce ;) Keep it basic but good quality products and products that compliment each other. I also bought a new weber BBQ which helps me cook the patties just how i like them.

4. You learnt to play club music in Victorian regional areas. What are the best lines to deter Jimmy Barnes requests?

I was pretty lucky with my club i started out in (Yahoo Bar), it was always a more of a younger crowd and i didnt really get requests for Jimmy Barnes, it was more requests for pop music. I always just say ill play it soon or i straight dont have it, haven't had too many people be too painful about it. Its probably worse now using serato on my laptop cos people think i can just download the track on the spot to play for them.

5. What “sound” do you wish you had the back catalogue to?

I would have said Baltimore club but thanks to Scottie B about 2 years ago he gave me it all hahaha. I think i would def love the back catalogue of the Dancehall scene, there is so much dancehall history and sooo many riddims out there that i would love dive into.

Lunartic was destined to mental destitution through a lack of respect and harmony towards Moonshine. DJ Crater went bonkers after he was sent to the moon to live out his existence in isolation bringing with him only a Music Production Center...

3. Psyde Projects? Not so much a side project anymore, whats in the pipeline for your crew?

An EP and a free single (which are finished). Plus we're already working on a new album. Our music has also been selected to be potentially synchronized with a couple new upcoming television shows on the ABC!!!

P.s. It's pronounced 'THE Psyde Projects' and not "Psyde Projects". Sorry to be a stick in the mud but no one ever gets it right!

4. You can actually cut, scratch, juggle, mix, what is the next stage as a DJ?

I guess the next step would be to potentially incorporate a visual aspect to my sets such as Sampology is doing at the moment. But I'm also currently working on another 'psyde project' with a drummer from a metal band. We're basically a get-the-party-started kinda act bridging a hip-hop style party DJ set with live drumming and accompanying visuals and light works. Fun huh?

5. You have got a Euro escape coming up, any gigs we can list?

At the moment the only gig I have for certain is in a progressive bar called Bikofe in Ljubljana. There I hope to play a very wide variety of eclectic and esoteric sounds that I'm currently in to. I'm also working on a gig in London and potentially Amsterdam, so I'll definitely keep all you guys posted when or if that happens

Then, just when you are about to take that 35th Xanax, you notice that the song contains some completely misguided homage to Biggie Smalls’ ‘Party and Bullshit’.

At which point, event committing suicide seems like a superfluous act and you are somehow summoned out of your death bed, you fall to your knees, cry out and look at the sky shouting, ‘Lord, why hast thou forsaken me’, and decide at that point that the first way to change the world is to change yourself.

And that is how Jihadists and/or domestic terrorists are made.

Yes, blame the excesses of the West. Those excesses in this case being the excess of fucking time that Guetta and Fiddy had on their hands to decide that collaborating on anything other than a cooking show was actually a good idea and that it might make the world a better place.

At which point, those people who actually pay attention to pop music might point out that Snoop did the same thing. To which I respond thusly: Snoop will do fucking anything for money. Which is what makes him Snoop, and therefore fucking great. What you see is what you get. I mean, the guy appeared on fucking ‘Don’t Shoot Me’ (and no, the irony of 50 Cent doing the same thing is not lost on me); he made a porno; and, possibly the clearest money grab of all, he made ‘The Wash’ as well as appearing in ‘Starsky and Hutch’. The difference here is that Snoop changes none of his behaviour for any of these things. Curtis Jackson, on the other hand will change everything for money.

And that, my friends, is what is precisely why I hate the ALP. Or something.

MFTLS Q&A - MOOSE

Moose is part Crackpot, part Inverto. Moose is a guitar man but could pass as a keyboarding lady. Instead he leaves that up to nurse Hanna. Moose and his guitar have been on many journeys through Melbourne, and on the MFTLS compilation he throws down with both crews. Upon searching for news on the Moose, it seems he has an IMDB listing, for which he strums in one of Hugo Weavings alias bands. It aslo states his involvment with the local TV production of The Late Show (HERE).

1. You have worked with Ransom on many projects. What got you two together in the first place?
A singer paired me & Jade up with Ransom, imagining the result would somehow be positive UK soul like she was into. Earlier she'd given Phil a whole stack of new age reading 'You Can Heal Your Life' etc - told him to 'just get lyrics out of them' Anyone who knows Ransom knows just how fucking funny that is.
2. Most of your musical life is in Melbourne, have you had any wow musical moments outside of your hometown?
Many. Usually concerning ratios of vomit to motel room wall area.

3. You used to DJ after Sunshine some mornings to strictly send people home comfortably. What was your method?
Backing off the throttle slowly, killing the engines and coasting to a halt. But that was the brief, basically. The shift had taken it's toll on others before me--a well meaning idea, they'd figured that rather than just kill the system, open the blinds and yell 'get out', it would be mutually agreeable to have someone nurse a bunch of hardcore, still somehow rather alert and energetic punters into a cosy hot-chocolate & slippers mood over the course of a couple of hours. They'd yawn, have a stretch and float out. Oddly though, as the music became more and more soothing they would become increasingly uptight, awake & abusive, which is very strange since it was already after 11 am and most of them had been up all night! You'd think they'd have been ready for bed by then. Then there were the strange threatening gentlemen who would hover by the booth with their arms folded. They'd stare at the punters trying to make eye contact with any that were looking tired & all the while standing over me growling at me to 'pump it up'. What was it to them? They weren't even dancing! They would get very angry.
4. Both Inverto and Crackpot have binding female members, has this softened up your rock n roll attitude from the past?	5. What part of technology have you really embraced, what part sucks
I've ceased throwing half eaten wholegrain blueberry muffins out of ground floor hotel windows. Hardly ever apply temporary tribal tatts these days. So, definitely	Never put a vacuum cleaner on your balls unless it's rated @ < 1400 watts. Embraced? I love my huggy-robot if that's what you mean. When MIDI started getting spat out of DAWs via interfaces things slid downhill fast. Being able to re-harmonise chordal samples in Melodyne DNA will be incredible if it lives up to its promise. Soldering irons are good.

MWTLS Q&A - PLANET JUMPER

1. Planet Jumper must have a moment when they went interplanetary, what part of Melbourne nightlife gets you intergalactic?

There have been heaps of moments that could be considered intergalactic in terms of Melbourne's nightlife for Planet Jumper. In terms of international acts, seeing the first P Funk concert in 2002 was mindblowking as was Roger Waters performance of Dark Side of the moon. DJ Shadow's first show at the forum was seminal as was seeing Theo Parrish rock revolver for 5 hours. We really dug both Cobblestone Jazz and Radio Slave at Rainbow Serpent this year who were both great for different reasons. On the local front, watching any number of locals push boundaries has been awesome. All the usual heads figure: Agent 86, Phil Ransom, Mike Callander etc. I do like it though, when I have been caught off guard. Like seeing Opsimath (a live techno group complete with live drums and percussion) slam one of the last Brunswick st festivals. Or when after having received a free ticket to Parklife many moons ago and being completely disappointed by almost all of the acts, to only later stumble into St Jeromes to see a DJ who was blending the most awesome mix of disco, tribal house and hip hop. I had never seen him before and when I asked who he was he simply said "Max". Better than any of the music I had heard at Parklife the entire day.

2. Top 3 must have production tools for Planet Jumper?

In terms of production we really love the mix of sampling combined the use of more digital sounds. So I would prob have to say that the 3 pieces of kit we couldn't live without are
- Giles audio pre amp (excellent for vox)
- A copy of Sound Forge (awesome for cutting up samples)
- Rockton Talkbox in combination with a microkorg (I know that's two, but they go so well together)

3. Who gave you your first big break into djing / playing live?

There have been plenty of people who have helped us out along the way (and prob a few who I will forget to mention). Our first gig (which we kind of blagged our way into) was St Kilda fest. We ended up playing at the opening which was part of Soco Carnivale. We ended up playing to a packed room of drunken people who weren't quite sure what to make of us. Have to thank Amber at Port Phillip council and especially my lovely partner Anne for insisting we get off our arses and apply to play. Nigel (Agent 86) gave us our first release on Lightspeed which was awesome. Eric "Obvliveus" Ryan has been super helpful in getting the Planet Jumper name out there. Phil Ransom for showing faith early on and getting us spots in both the front and back rooms of Revolver. Jonny Mac should also be mentioned for his help over this past summer.

4. Whats the difference between Steve "Funk" Ford and Planet Jumper?

The difference between me (Steve Ford) and Planet Jumper is that I am only one person, where as Planet Jumper is more of a production collective. It consists of myself, Drew Schapper (who not only has super innovative production ideas, but is also a sick percussionist and an even better drummer - awesome for live shows), Ash Mortimer, who is kind of like our resident studio genius. He is super handy to have round, especially if everything goes balls up. Finally, last but not least, Henry "Big Bank" Hanks who is representing the Planet Jumper sound in Norway. He brings the party vibes for sure. Each member contributes something a little different but all are important at bringing the Planet Jumper sound to life.

5. Who is on your bucket-list of collaborators?

Would love to work Bootsy Collins someday. Would also really like to collaborate with Neighbour in Canada. I reckon we would also be right up for collaborating with any of the producers on the late show artist comp too. What a bevy of talent there is on that disc....

MFTLS Q&A - NICK THAYER

Nick Thayer is known all over the world for his unique twist on club music and production. He always rinses out our front room bassbins, and his tracklistings are untouchable, with many private weapons. I knew Nick was busy during the months of making the CD, so he asked me (Paz) to start something and then we can work on it. Nice and business like, we collabed a front room rinse out that samples the cameo appearance of Coconut from Kokanes first album... Nick is a tireless worker with much grind. I keep seeing Mat Cant on the same grind, and he name checks him, Great minds grind alike.

1. You made a music library recently. How many separate waves did you produce? Where can we get it?
Yeah it's the second sample pack I've done for the Loopmasters guys. It's around 500 samples all up. Drum loops, bass loops, multi samples, instrument loops, vocals and the like. I think it's out early July on www.loopmasters.co.uk
2. You worked with Paz on the TLS track? What part of his production confused you the most?
The labeling of parts to be honest. Nightmare!
3. Of all the TLS dj's / producers you are the most exportable? Who in Melbourne do you think the world is sleeping on?
I've thought for years guys like Agent 86 and of course Ransom deserved much more exposure. And Mat Cant is killing it at the moment. Expecting big things from him.

Ableton Live 8. Bose headphones. Vintage Drum Machine sample library.
5. Your music has made it onto games soundtracks and commercials. What product would you most like it to be associated with

1. Why Booshank?
I don't know what it means. I googled it and the only thing that comes up is an R&B artist in the states going by the same name. He's on my blog, you should check it out. Also, I imagine it's probably the last thing Carl Williams heard: "Boo! shank" (don't print this if you think it'll get me shanked/shivved).
2. Osso Buco! - Is that your motivation or have you witnessed Osso Buco in a club.
I usually just end up picking something infront of me when naming a track or mix, and the first time I saved the project was to go and check on my dinner. I nailed the osso buco by the way. MFTLS Q&A - T-REK

T-Rek has always been a part of The Late Show family and is now spawning his own family under the moniker Freakshow Disco. T-Rek teamed up with Melbourne good guy Mike Callander for the MFTLS track "The Grey Nomad". The pair are very different in their approach, Mike being the sort of guy who would iron his shirt before every gig where as T-Rek would be scanning his basement for his cowboy hat. They both have delivered steady house music under their aliases and this one writes itself as a backroom 6a.m barnstormer. We catch up with T-Rek to see if he has ever ironed a shirt.

1. The Grey Nomad, which one of you decided to make techno for pensioners?
I heard the term on one of those rubbish current affairs programs. Though it might be a funny production moniker for us. Ended up a song title instead though.
2. Which production methods do you and Callander have in common?
I'm sure there probably are some that we have in common, but I can't really identify them. I generally like to work with people who have a different approach to me anyway, keeps things far more interesting.
3. What does your equipment rider list look like for live shows in 2011?
Maton & Eastwood guitars, Ampeg & Vox amplifiers, Electro-Harmonix and Boss fx pedals, home-made Theremin, Moog Voyager and Mooger Foogers....and one of those computer things. (The picture is a rig T-Rek is using for a venture with Acid Jacks member and Revolver royalty Honeysmack)

MFTLS Q&A - OSS 3000

Oss now lives in London. He established himself as a collector and dj in Melbourne, playing underground club vibes. On a weekly basis he mixed up hip-hop, beats, breaks, disco, funk, jazz and all the hybrids at places like The Lounge and The Nightcat. This eventually turned into A&R work and he moved to the UK. At Christmas time, Oss heads back to Melbourne and you can catch him laceing The Late Show with golden UK styles. His track "Sleepwalker" off the MFTLS compilation was the last submitted, but proved to be one of the most outstanding efforts. For the sake of the release he has submitted some answers to our Q&A, and we hope to solve the issue of who is Swan B and Frank Rodriguez?

1. Sleepwalker - Sounds like a series spin off of Texas Ranger with Chuck Norris on Rohypnol. What is the greatest dream you have had?
I dream about planes all the time - big planes, experimental planes, and I fly in my dreams a lot. They're all pretty good. I like planes. I don't like Chuck Norris. He looks like he needs a wash.
2. Top 3 London nightlife moments?.
1. Playing the main spot on the main floor at Magic Bus at The Blue Note as soon as I arrived in London. How chuffed was I?
2. Going to Nag, Nag, Nag and The Cock and finding out that someone had moved beyond house / broken beat / techno. Such a revelation and a relief not to have to hear anything with a jazz influence
3. The Nuphonic nights at the Bedroom Bar with my friend Julia. Casual, drunken, word-of-mouth clubbing in small bars beats big clubs hands down.
3. What moment in Melbourne made you want to DJ?
I was asked to play at a benefit and fell in love with it completely. Then I thought, 'this is a piece of piss'. Then I met Swan B (Sean Bowman), and Frank Rodriguez and thought 'ooh, these guys are good'. Then my world merged with the hip-hop crowd - Ransom, Mish and their mates and that's when I realised I was in trouble. Playing alongside all of these guys (and later of course J-nett) was heaps of fun but it made me realise just how little I knew. That's OK. I know everything now.
4. How many records did you take to London with you when you left?
Way too many - a whole crate - which got superceded in about a month. Pish to that though. I don't play vinyl anymore.
5. If you could have your own pirate radio show, what would you showcase?
After playing out and on radio (a bit) for 23 years I decided to never play old music out again; I had been pretty lazy occasionally before that. Massively re-edited or remixed is fine. Revival, never. There is too much amazing new stuff put out for anyone to have to revert to playing the same old shit. I like pretty much all music except dixieland, ragtime and blues; I even like some country. I have a hard spot for Chic, ACR, The B-52's and Brasil '66. However I'm constantly listening to new stuff. Probably Ku-Bo, he's got such a distinctive sound that's both very current yet timeless. Listen to his older productions now and they still sound fresh today. It's also very hard to analyze what's going on with his tracks, as they often rely on an unusual combination of sounds
4. Disco Harry mentioned that your track and his were the only ones to use a 12/8 time signature. Have you ever cared about time signatures? What production method is more important than time signatures then?
I know nothing much about time signatures actually, for this Elephants I based the rhythm and progression around mexican 3ball music, I was drawn to 3ball initially because it was such a refreshing change from the usual 4/4 that you hear in nightclubs. The most important factor in a track for me though is whether it transcends the process through which it was created. Does it make you bounce around the room or does it make you think of Ableton presents and sample libraries.
5. Current Top 3 TLS backroom songs, you want to play, but it might lose the floor?
DJ Clock - Toi Toi. This a bit of a make or break tune, if the floor gets into this then you know it's going to be a great night but if they all head to the bar you know you'll gonna be working hard.
Black Blood - Chicano (Danny K edit). This tune has never cleared the floor for me ever. It's one of those records that really taps into the feeling of being out very late and loosing yourself.
JD Twitch - Cumbia 1. Always clears the floor but love it so much I'll just keep preserving with this one.

SOME IDIOT TAKES GBH AND NOW WE HAVE TO HAVE A DEBATE ON DRUGS
At the risk of editorialising (not that it really makes any difference
anyway, because basically my life seems to involve little else other
than spouting my basically ill-informed, highly opinionated horseshit
on anyone who will listen, which, by the way is possibly the most
prevalent form of news journalism in Australia today, but, hey, at
least I know that I’m ill-informed and opinionated, as opposed to,
say, Alan Jones, who thinks he’s informed and neutral) … So, anyways,
the point is that some idiot decided to get high on GHB, he ended up
in the back of a car on account of the fact that his friends were high
and paranoid, and somehow thought that their version of first aid
(which I’m assuming was along the lines of a cup of Lipton and a piece
of vegemite toast) would be better than the St John’s version, and now
suddenly we’re having a debate on legalising drugs. Not wanting to
sound like an asshole, but people generally take drugs with a certain
level of expectation, i.e. you knock back a pinger and you expect to
be hugging everyone in the room and letting those strings wash over
you; you smoke some meth and you expect to be counting pieces of dirt
in the carpet and picking your face off; you take GHB and you expect
to have your heart slow down and possibly die. At which point, there
needs to be a general understanding among the pro-legalisation camp
and the Fred Niles of the world: sadly, being an idiot is already
legal. The best you’re going to manage is to do the same as you do
with cars. Taking a few pingers and a couple of joints is a little
like driving at 100 in a 100 zone. Breaking the speed limit on the
other hand is something like a 4-day meth binge (no pun intended). And
a car crash waiting to happen, well that speaks for itself.

I know all y’all up there in Sydney are getting all sentimental about
Tank closing, and I’m sure all those meaningful conversations in front
of the bathroom mirror were so significant that they changed the world
(just as dance music was somehow going to end global conflict), and,
really, I do feel for you, but the fact is that you people brought it
on yourselves by voting in Clover Moore, who, if you hadn’t noticed,
seems to hate everything in the world other than Clover Moore.
Precisely how a woman with the personality of a Jacaranda caravan got
elected to become mayor of a city known for anal sex and surfing is

Dj stiffy's 3 rare as hen's teeth collaboration records no one should own

So, anyways, most of y'all think that I actually do very little djing, and the whole 'dj' thing could actually be some hangup from 1997 when every dude and their dad was one or both a dj and graphic designer, and was working on some horseshit multimedia project about dj's as the new postmodern bricoleurs, and that dj spooky was doing 'really innovative' work (and, it needs to be added, it was actually a great time be playing records on account of the fact that nobody seemed to be capable of doing anything without a dj, e.g shop opening, installation artwork, organic market, tv show, night at the pub, which inevitably led to a general contempt among society at large, who had basically got sick of having to go anywhere without bumping into some idiot with a few roni size records and having to pay $50/hour for the privilege of bumping into said idiot). Anyways, the point is that I do have a record collection that craps on most; here are the tunes that a very select group of people actually own, and are so goddamn rare that they were only on filestube for 6 months. Extraordinary.

Brett Lee vs duck sauce - eye of the tiger
This was van helden's attempt to crack the Indian market. It had all the elements: cheesy cover, cricket star, bollywood music video. There was just one problem: it was shit.

S club 7 vs wu tang clan - s club up in yo ass
This was actually an unfinished project that came about through the late odb's weird obsession with Rachel s-club. The project got called off when Rachel worked out the odb's lyrics were supposed to be read as 'club in yo ass', referring to her in particular.

Kanye west versus mars Volta - the concept album concept album
Record execs rightly ditched this project, which was a concept album about concept albums. If you can imagine the most overblown pretentious horseshit that would come out of a supergroup collaboration between gram parsons, roger waters and, say, sting, multiplied it by 100, then gave it a central organizing principle involving everything dan brown had ever written, with a simultaneous concept art fashion show organized by viktor and rolf and directed by Lars Von trier, you might come close to imagining how fucking overblown this project was. Kanye eventually just settled for a duet with the guy from maroon 5 , which basically gave the same result in about 1% of the listening time.

I mean, seriously, since I first heard 'We Gettin Crunk' (back in 2008 I think) I'm sure I have played at least one HeavyFeet track in every single Late Show set I've done. So, that joke’s probably been made a zillion times before since Eminem decided that he didn’t need to be funny anymore and thought that sounding like a Linkin Park cover band was actually a good idea, but the question I’m asking this week is: does he really need to drag Dr Dre with him on this poetry-scribbling, moon-staring Robert-Smith-of-the-Cure type roadtrip through post-divorce angst? Can’t he just make songs about smoking weed again? Oh, sorry, I forgot, it’s called Detox. I mean, why didn’t he just call the album 10-Day Exercise Regime?

FIVE DAYS OF CABLE
As wonderful as the sensation of cable television is, particularly in developing countries, where being in a hotel room behind a large fence and kilometres of razor wire generally gives you a good feel for local culture and puts you in touch with the common man, particularly when you decide that the 2001 Cotes du Rhones will go well with your steak, and then get excited about the Scotch selection, when, of course, the alternative would be some $2 noodles a 50c beer and a $5 handjob (which, when you think about it, is probably underpriced in a global context; I mean, imagine if, say, Starbucks started offering handjobs for $5, equivalent to the price for of a very large coffee, which would be truly exceptional, I mean, can you imagine how friggin busy Starbucks would be at around 8am in the city?) ... So, anyway, the point is that alongside the positives of the steak and Scotch, the downside is that watching cable for five days can fuck with your mind and assist you completely lose touch with reality. To wit: not being aware of the cultural abomination that is Far East Movement’s ‘Like a G6’ was a great thing; now its image has been permanently seared on to my synapses. Please make it stop or I’m going to have to cut out my brain.

This actually would have been much better if Snoop had decided to do this a lot earlier. And film and record it while on Sheen’s five-day coke-and-porn-star orgy, then release it in a special DVD souvenir box set, with an additional audio commentary.

THE ATTENTION SPAN OF THE WESTERN WORLD IS PRECISELY SEVEN DAYS

So, anyways, there I was, performing my favourite home-bound activity, i.e. the one-handed bong hit with simultaneous masturbation (and, really, this is only for professional masturbators and bong smokers, and believe me, I know for a fact that there are very few people who actually get paid to do both; and there’s a reason why this shouldn’t be performed by amateurs – namely, that any slip up can result in a one or both of ash and bongwater on or around the genital area, or, alternatively seminal fluid in cone and/or bongwater, neither of which is an attractive prospect – this ain’t just playing with fire, this is playing with semen and fire at the same time) ...

Anyways, the point was that I was watching Japanese pornography on this particular day (something about a drunken businessman dressed as a penis, which, was in turn dressed up as a drunken businessman, which was, well, you know the drill ... ), at which point I was reminded about Japan ... something happened in Japan, didn’t it? Oh yes, parts of the country literally got destroyed by a large tsunami/bukkake, thousands of people died and it was incredibly awful and tragic. Not that you’d remember, because now everyone has conveniently moved on to the commencement of AFL/NRL season, Bob Hawke attempting to tongue-kiss Kristina Keneally, and something about soldiers being racist, which is precisely the kind of horseshit that would offend a GetUp-donating 24-year-old first-year lawyer from hipsterville, who for some fucking bizarre reason has a problem with being a lawyer and potentially earning 250,000-plus dollars a year, and in order to circumvent said frustration tells people that the whole ‘lawyer thing’ is just temporary until he/she gets a job at an NGO or the UN, or AusAID, and that their real passion is music, i.e. playing in a band that thinks it’s Flying Lotus but is actually more like a Maroon 5 covers band on a very fucking bad day.

Anyway, the real point of this was not only to remind you, dear readers, that there’s probably a whole bunch of important shit that happened more than a week ago that you’ve forgotten about (e.g. Loleatta Holloway dying (and may she rest in peace), Charlie Sheen getting shitfaced), but also that there was actually a reason that Christians made weeks seven days long, i.e. people needed to be reminded every seven days that God can be a right prick when he wants to, but if you do the right thing, you’ll end up hanging out with a lot of guys with beards, i.e. living in Northcote. Or Marrickville. Or the Valley.

Yes, I know everyone’s going to be crying and writing obituaries and getting all teary on account of Nate Dogg being dead, but (and I know, I’m gonna cop a lot of heat for this) we gotta keep this shit in perspective, seriously. I mean, fuck, it’s not as though fucking Yeezy, Weezy or even fucking Jeezy died. And its eems that about the only goddamn fucking thing that people actually manage to fucking remember him for is goddamn Regulate, which, don’t get me wrong, is a great song, but the only person who seems to have actually made any money out of it is Michael McDonald (and, yes people, go and do some homework and bother to find out who the genius behind ‘What a Fool Believes’ actually did for rap music), and, for that matter, everybeody seems to be overlooking the fact that he was actually responsible for contributing significantly to arguably the greatest four minutes in the history of rap music (and certainly West Coast rap music), i.e. The Next Episode by Dr Dre, and I defy anyone to say with a clear conscience that they never, ever screamed ‘smoke weed everyday’ at the top of their lungs after blowing a mssive joint in the back of a Kingswood circa 2001. So, anyways, the point is, a lot of rappers die, and a lot of people get sad when rappers die, but the fact is that when, say, someone like Snoop makes his way to heaven, then you can think about donning the black tracksuit and matching Adidas Superstars for a month and downing a bottle of yak and a few blunts. In the meantime, may Nate Dogg rest in peace.

VALE 10,000-plus JAPANESE DUDES
Er, and while we’re at it, and everyone was crying into their ‘Above the Rim’ soundtracks, did they actually forget to fucking notice that there were about 10,000 or more people who completely lost their shit (e.g. lives, families, home and contents) in Japan? (And you can assume that there were probably a large number of copies of the said Above the Rim soundtrack lost in said tsunami disaster, in addition to the large number of copies that will be permanently irradiated and therefore completely unplayable without getting radiation sickness – this is, of course, the problem with being a middling rap artist, i.e. you always end up being big in Japan.)

So, anyways, the point is that there’s an election coming up in Australia’s most populous state, and the fact of the matter is that the state of Sydney and those other suburbs that generally fall under the heading New South Wales has, on balance, turned to complete shit, mostly due to a systematic procession of what can only be described as Labor Party retards, a group of people who make people like Judy Moran or Brednan Fevola seem not only competent, but also measured, reasonable and financially responsible. So, in endorsing the candidate for the NSW Premier, it helps to weigh up the potential pros and cons of each party’s policies and approach to the state’s financial management . But it’s equally important to simply say, fuck that, and think about who you’d actually want running the state, thinking about the next generation, and ask the following questions. Do you want state MPs who are happy to spend taxpayers’ money looking at pornography and jerking off at their desks? Do you want state MPs that are happy hanging out with sauna-inhabiting bears in Darlinghurst? Do you want state MPs to be married to blokes who are more than happy to go a pick up a couple of pingers from an undercover police officer? More importantly, which potential NSW Premier would you most easily envision with your penis in their mouth? Frankly, dear voters, I would in fact rather have MPs that are human enough to want the same things out of life that I do and share the same values that I do going into the future. These things include: unfettered access to pornography, the right to masturbation within the workplace, random casual sex with complete strangers, and the occasional pinger with my wife. Most importantly, the idea of putting my dick anywhere near Barry O’Farrell is so goddamn nauseating that I think I would rather attempt drinking the leftover fluids from an anal bukakke movie with a straw. So, with that, I heartily endorse the ALP at this weekend’s state election. Because, when it comes down to it, they’re just like you and me: a bunch of fuckups.

Bit sad to see one our favourite active Melbourne DJs pack her bags and head abroad. She'll be joining us at TLS one last time next Saturday the 19th March so make sure you get down and say goodbye.

A Short Essay on ‘Charlie Sheen’s War On Losers’ By DJ Stiffy

Most people with any sense are generally getting quite excited about Charlie Sheen right now. To wit, I saw a piece of graffiti the other day that said, ‘Free Charlie Sheen’, which was utterly baffling and completely coherent at the same time, i.e. baffling because Charlie Sheen is not in jail and would be generally considered one of the ‘freest’ individuals in the world right now, but also completely coherent in that adopting the whole Charlie Sheen philosophy requires a certain metaphysical leap, and that leap involves getting on a motorcycle, jumping over a tank filled with acid-inhabiting aqueous shark-alligators, and through a ring of fire into your own alternate reality, and in this graffiti-writing person’s universe, Charlie Sheen is somehow being persecuted.

The simplistic way to look at the revolutionary nature of Charlie Sheen is this: the guy is a role model for people who want to get high all the time and live with a couple of porn stars. Or alternatively, Charlie Sheen has declared war on losers. He has set the new benchmark for the rock star lifestyle for generations to come. He makes Keith Richards look like an ashamed virgin looking at bra catalogues and jerking off into a sock.

The less simplistic model is this: Charlie Sheen has made it socially acceptable for people to get high all the time and live with a couple of porn stars, and is therefore championing free speech and challenging traditional family structures.

But if you actually wanna get really very serious and look at the socio-political implications of what can only now be described as the post-Sheen era, think about it this way. Sheen is the ultimate syntheses and consolidation of business venture, entertainment and individual personality. To explain, the personality that is Charlie Sheen is its own entertainment; whether the outside world finds Sheen having coke-fuelled orgies entertaining is irrelevant; Sheen does it for his own pleasure. That engaging in this behaviour is actually profitable for Sheen is only semi-relevant; more profound is that the behaviour, combined with the personality, is its own form of marketing, tapping directly into media outlets globally: Charlie Sheen doesn’t need to find publicity; publicity finds him.

In simple terms, Charlie Sheen is a place in everyone’s mind, where you are not only paid, but also worshipped for worshipping no-one but yourself and your own actions. You can do no wrong. You are always right. You can have what you want, when you want.

He is this generation’s zenith.

EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH RAP TODAY PART 1
I don’t have a problem with Eminem’s decision to exchange his services for an endorsement of Lipton tea. It’s completely reasonable – the guy’s gotta feed his family, right? The problem I have is with the fact that a tea company thinks that a rapper is a suitable endorsement for, of all things, tea. This is the shit your grandma drinks, right? (That said, I’m particularly partial to a cuppa – white with one – at about 3pm along with a very mild joint prior to heading back to the office). Anyways, the point is, anyone who is still naive enough to think that rap music is going to change the world needs to, er, get off the bongs. Well, for a couple of days at least.

EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH RAP TODAY PART 2
Being the kid of someone famous can do wonders for your life and career. Look at Matthew Newton. It can, however, make life completely miserable for you. Look at Chet Haze. My favourite comment from Tom Hanks’ son, who has somehow miraculously decided he wants to be a rapper, and not even in any kind of absurdist prank-style way a la Joaquim Phoenix, said this last week: “I don’t know if I could ever do this. I’m not from the ‘hood. I’m not a gangster. I’m a white kid from the suburbs.” Yes, boo hoo. Being a white kid from the suburbs means that attempting to become a rapper is even harder than, say, being the child of an alcoholic crack dealer who used your head as an ironing board.

EVEWRYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH RAP TODAY PARTS 3 to 5
- The mainstream media thought that it was important enough to report that J-Lo thinks that Weezy is the greatest rapper of all time. This is, of course, a profound contribution to the future of hip hop from the woman who proved without doubt that if you want Diddy to produce your record, one way to do it is suck his cock.

- Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas released an autobiography, which will rank up there with other high achievers who think that the world needs to know more about the first 30 years of their lives, e.g. Shane Watson and Jason Akermanis.

- Yeezy’s Fatburger restaurants have closed down, signalling yet another failure for rappers in the hospitality industry, proving that they should stick to selling cologne, making oversized jeans and, oh yes, making records.

In case you haven't heard, TLS resident Mat Cant has a new radio show called Get Low debuting on Loose Joints on Wednesday 16th February. He'll be dropping some of the biggest tunes in dancehall, hip hop, UK funky and bass culture each fortnight. Each show will also feature an exclusive 20-minute guest DJ mix from some of the world's most exciting DJs and producers.

In conjunction with TLS and the Get Low radio show, Mat will be hosting the Get Low Monthly Club Party at Revolver Upstairs in the backroom. This wont be any early morning party, it all kicks off at 10pm until 2am when The Late Show takes over. For the launch on Saturday 19th February Mat will be joined by special guests Opulent Sound and Tranter to keep you dancing. FRANCHISE WATCH: TASTES LIKE CHICKEN
Apparently it’s perfectly normal to be touring Australia playing ‘Fear of a Black Planet’, and then opening a chicken franchise the next. That said, you gotta hand it to Flava Flav for at least attempting to do something outside of the conventional career path for washed-up rappers (i.e. getting shot, getting fat, getting fat and getting shot). In which case, he’s being quite astute, i.e. letting other people get fat, or, even better, letting other fat people shoot each other at his fried chicken restaurants. Nonetheless, the name of the franchise – ‘Flav’s Fried Chicken’ – could have been a little more inspired, e.g. Chicken Flavor, Flavey Gravy, Can Do Nuggets For Ya Man (at which point there would be a lifesize cut out of Flavor outside each restaurant saying, ‘Here Come the Drumsticks!’ There is also the possibility that this new business venture will be significantly more successful than Terminator X’s ostrich farm (true) or the S1W’s childcare franchise (not true).

TAX WATCH: DEAR NAS, GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER
Apparently Nas owes more than USD6 million in taxes. This is ten times what Lil Jon owes, which says something about rapping ability and intelligence. Most, if not all followers of rap music would rate Nas’ flow significantly over Lil Jon’s annoying (although consistent) yelling, and generally conclude that given the subject matter that Nas takes on (and his avoiding of doing a duet with Usher), Nas is the more intelligent rapper. Perhaps, but an intelligent person doesn’t really let their tax bill blow out to more than six million big ones, at which point you have to turn your entire universe upside down and conclude that Lil Jon’s Bounce Dat Ass possibly has greater political significance than NY State of Mind. Perhaps not, but it’s worth thinking about.

Getting patriotic is sensationally kick ass, and Jessica Watson turns 18 in May, so I’ll finally fell comfortable about having a crazy ass jerk off fantasy about me and her at sea for 100 days and 100 nights ... And anyway, thank fucking god for Jessica winning. I mean, I thought jerking off over the Australian of the Year recipients would be a fabulously patriotic thing to do, but the talent has been pretty fucking slim, with the possible exception of Tim Flannery ... US and Chinese international relations will hit an all-time high, consummated with public lovemaking between Barack Obama an Hu Jintao, resulting in the birth of a super-powered immortal demi-god named Hubama, who will eventually rule the entire globe with his iron fisting ability.

Environmental campaigning group Greenpeace will continue with their campaign against perceived wrongs with the Earth and its inhabitants, and will propose global band on the following: food, water, cars and electricity.

You have worked with some hugely important Melbourne Hip Hop crews, who influenced you the most?

I'm really proud of what friends such as Brad Strut, Trem, Reason, Ennio Styles, and Raph Boogie have achieved over the years. We were all very young in the early 90s and learnt a lot from each other. They were unique times, and I'm humbled to have played my part in that era. For me, DJ Idem was my first mentor. He really taught me about DJing from a Hip Hop perspective. Ransom was also (and still is) a huge inspiration to me, and I always look forward to hearing him on my rare trips to Melbourne. Oldschool melbourne DJ Les Toth also inspired me before I really knew anyone. Taksi, Kano, Jnett, Peril.. The list goes on..

Did you ever "battle" as a Hip Hop DJ?

I Entered one of the first DMC comp in melbourne, although I was very young and it was really a premature move on my behalf. I have never really considered myself a battle DJ. I have always been more comfortable playing to dancefloors - and also doing show cases, which I did for a number of years in Brisbane as part of the Big Rigs DJ team alongside DJs Katch & Damage. We were doing 6 turntable routines in clubs in the mid 90s. I don't think any one else was doing that kind of thing in Australia at that time.

When did you move to Sydney?

In the late 90s. I grew up in Melbourne and left around '92 to live in Brisbane for a few years - which is when I really started getting serious about playing the club circuit. When I finally did move to Sydney, Joe Coneely from the Vibes On A Summers Day festivals put me under his wing, and really looked after me as a DJ, and got me established in Sydney fairly quickly.

Where you playing "club" music in Melbourne before you left?

I kind of grew into DJing from two very different angles - Firstly, I had establishing myself as a local mobile DJ around my area of Camberwell playing a real mixture of music in the late 80s - and then I was also known as a Hip Hop DJ - It was really about cutting my teeth, and getting to know how to entertain different crowds. I was quite young, and finding out by experience where I fit in musically. I was also really interested in radio, after having religiously listened to Cool Rap C, Idem, Krisy, and Kieron Meigher. My first radio show was a weekly graveyard shift on 3CR, which I inherited from P-Jam. I fell in love with the medium, and have had a weekly radio show on various stations ever since. My current radio show "Groove Therapy" on 2SER has been broadcasting since 2002.

What clubs were great at the time?

I frequented The Lounge every week to listen To Taksi and Kano at "Hop Scotch". The Big Bamboo had a great Hip Hop night called "The Boomin System" run by DJ Krisy in those days as well, which I was fortunate to spin at a few times. And of course I was always keen to check out where ever DJ Ransom or Peril were playing. Back then it seemed that there was a new Hip Hop night every few months, as others were shut down.

What was in your crates as you left Melbourne?

By the time I left Melbourne in '92 I had a fairly heavy collection of oldschool sounds that I found digging at various spots. DJ Idem really taught me how to dig for records, the labels and artists to look out for, and also taught me about rocking double copies and looping the breaks.
I lived very close to the Camberwell Sunday markets, and made weekly missions there at the crack of dawn. Ennio Styles also lived around my way and was a big influence on me (Back then he was known as Blackout from a local Hip Hop duo called Code Of Ethics). He introduced me to more contemporary labels such as Mo Wax and Acid Jazz, which only had a couple of releases at the time. Those labels opened the flood gates for me and exposed me to so much new music, and gave me context to play different club sounds. By the time I reached Brisbane I had a full arsenal of music that I could confidently hit the clubs with.

What was the biggest change between music culture that you observed between cities?

Every city was different, but I always found my niche as I've played so many styles over the years. I think the fundamental difference now days is that crowds are getting younger and more suburban, and unfortunately that brings its own problems, as clubbers are not as responsive to quality music as years past. This is definately more to do with the over saturation of pop-media than location.

What's clubs are cracking in Sydney right now?

I prefer to play venues that give me free reign to play music with more depth than most of the disposable club sounds that are prevelent in most Sydney venues now. Places such as Tonic Lounge, Melt Bar, Ravicis, Tillbury, and Tone allow me to do that.

You are also a highly regarded presence in radio land, has it been difficult promoting new sounds on air?

Pushing new sounds on radio has never really been my focus. Programming my radio show mixes is really an organic process. I don't really start with a bunch of new tracks that I need to push - rather the mix kinds of creates itself as various records mix in to one another. I much prefer my radioshow / podcast to be a timeless mixtape that people can enjoy at anytime, rather than focus on "what hot" at that moment.

What acts or sounds from Sydney should we keep an ear out for?

DJ Huwston and Simon Caldwell are the guys who are pushing the boundaries in Sydney. Both are extremely talented DJs with a lot of depth. Also, DJ Mike Who - a relatively new DJ on the scene, but he has a great understanding of how a DJ should work, and has great respect for the music he plays. I also have to mention my 2 residents at Tonic Lounge, Ricky Albert and Meem - both who are very experienced Sydney DJ's but shy away from the attention.
